Founded in 1958, the department of Engineering Mechanics includes the four sub-disciplines: solid mechanics, general mechanics, fluid mechanics, and engineering mechanics. In 1998, the general doctoral program of mechanics was accredited. In 2008, the Ministry of Education (MOE)’s Key Laboratory of Hydrodynamics and Testing Center of Engineering Mechanics were established. The Bachelor degree program of Engineering Mechanics was appraised as National Characteristic Programs.
At present, there are 60 faculty and staff members in the department of Engineering Mechanics, including 20 professors, 27 associate professors, 1 Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
The research areas in the department are primarily as follows: high-speed hydrodynamics, environmental fluid mechanics, computational fluid dynamics, mechanical behavior of advanced materials and structures, fracture/fatigue and interface mechanics, micro/nanomechanics and biomechanics, high performance computing and numerical methods, intelligent structures and composite mechanics, inverse problem and damage diagnosis, multi-system dynamics and control, spacecraft dynamics, non-linear dynamics, vibration and control, interface mechanics, etc. The department has placed great emphasis on ability training of both fundamental theory and practical application, cultivated high-level talents for fundamental research, engineering technology, and management in the related fields, and achieved enormous accomplishments in Science and Technology.
