The 12th Arctic Frontiers International Conference was held at Tromso, Norway, on 19th January, 2018. LI Yinfeng, Associate Professsor from School of Ocean and Civil Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (OCE, SJTU), and GAO Song, Graduate from OCE, were invited to participate in the conference by the Consulate General of Norway in Shanghai.

The Arctic Frontiers Conference, which focuses on the the Arctic sustainable development as the economy keeps growing, is made up of three parts, the Academia, the Government, and the Business circles. The theme of this year was “Link the Arctic”. Ine Eriksen Soreide, Norway Foreign Minister, indicated that although the world situation was always complex and constantly changing, the stability and cooperation were still the prominent characteristics of the Arctic regions and the overall goal of Norway’s policy on Arctic concentrated on maintaining the situation.

During the conference, Prof. LI Yinfeng took part in the session of Marine Micro-plastic pollution, made deep discussions of the application prospect of the cross-over disciplines study of mechanics of nanometre materials and biology behavior property on governing the future marine pollution, and acknowledged that besides of the threaten of climate changes in Arctic, the pollution issues are also especially alarming. Prof. LI Yinfeng was also invited to visit Tromso University and the Arctic Comprehensive Remote Sensing and Forcasting Center.

GAO Song, after the severe selection, attained the opportunity to attend the  Student Forum of Arctic Frontier Conference, who was the first Chinese student that ever took part in the forum. He visited the local representative institutes, such as Tromso University, Tromso Museum and KSAT astronomical service center, and took the lectures given by the political, industrial, and non-governmental experts.

LI Yinfeng and GAO Song also discussed issues of Arctic protection policies of Norway with Bjorn Midthun, Director of Arctic Affairs, Norway Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
