Professor Carlos Guedes Soares, Director of Center for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering, CENTEC, Lisbon University, Portugal, visited School of Ocean and Civil Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University(NOACE-SJTU) and made an academic report titled “Recent Progresses in Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering” on August 23rd, 2017. Professor WAN Decheng, Vice Dean of Institute of Science and Technology Development, SJTU, chaired the symposium and Prof. TANG Wenyong, Prof. WANG Jiasong, Prof. ZHANG Xinshu, Associate Prof. XUE Hongxiang, Associate Prof. CHEN Zhen, and more than 30 graduates attended the symposium on this summer vacation.

Professor Carlos Guedes Soares is the well-known expert in the field of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, and ever acted as chairman at International Ship and Offshore Structures Congress (ISSC), European Safety and Reliability Association (ESRA), International Maritime Association of the Mediterranean (IMAM) and Reliability Engineering and System Safety.

Professor Carlos Guedes Soares made a brief introduction of research development in the fields of Marine Environment, Marine Dynamics and Hydrodynamics, Marine Structures, Safety and Logistics of Maritime Transportation that CENTEC has recently made and especially shared hot issues in the field of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering at present, including Impact to Wind Wave Field Caused by Climate Changes, Abnormal Wave Formation and Evolution, Water Elasticity of Large Ships, Technology of Ship Saving and Reducing Resistance, Technology of CFD High Performance and High Precision Computing, Technology of Maritime Transportation Safety and Control, Maritime New Energy Development, Analysis of Ship and Platform Strength at Ice Zone, and New Deep-sea Marine Structure Development. 

At the end, Prof. Soares also had intensified discussions and multi-level exchanges with all present faculty and students, such as jointly applying for Sino-Portuguese Research Fund Project, Strengthening Cooperation on Marine Structure Performance Analysis and Experimental Research, and Creating more Opportunities of Faculty and Graduate Students Exchange Visits, etc. 

The visiting of Professor Carlos Guedes Soares had not only greatly strengthened the relation between Shanghai Jiao Tong University and University of Lisbon but also laid a solid foundation for the cooperations among the universities of Portugal, universities of European Union and SJTU.
