ICSBS 2019: 2nd International Conference on Sustainable Buildings and Structures

Date:2019-12-09 Reading: 378

The 2nd International Conference on Sustainable Buildings and Structures (ICSBS 2019) was held during 25-27 October, 2019 on Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University’s campus in Suzhou (China). Professor Xila Liu, Professor Jian Yang and three international students from School of Naval Architecture Ocean and Civil Engineering attended the conference as representatives of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). The conference was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), the Institute of Sustainable Materials and Environment (ISME) at XJTLU, the University of Hong Kong (HKU), and the Chinese Research Institute of Construction Management (CRIOCM). It aimed to bring together scientists and engineers from related disciplines to present and share the latest research outcomes and engineering practices towards the development of sustainable buildings and structures. Many intelligent and sharp international colleagues from different countries shared their research outcomes and project experiences which was helpful for the future implementation of sustainable buildings and structures.

The conference was well organized with interesting contents, new ideas and different perspectives. Many great keynote and invited speakers, and also more than 50 student presenters from different universities attended the conference. It was a three-day event with so many interesting seminars and discussions on various topics relating to the sustainable buildings and structures. Several sessions delivered by the keynote speakers and student presenters were very informative and insightful on their particular research projects. Additionally, each team had chances to present their research papers and exchange ideas with many experts.

During one of the keynote sessions, Professor Xila Liu, Chair Professor of SJTU School of Naval Architecture Ocean and Civil Engineering, delivered an impressive speech on construction and confidence in China. He presented his opinion about civil engineering education in China. According to Dr. Liu, the confidence of China is growing together with the development and implementation of various new technologies in the Chinese construction industry. He also presented construction achievements of China with several examples of massive infrastructure projects in China. Furthermore, the challenges of Chinese construction industry and some measures of sustainable development are also discussed in his talk.

In addition, as one of the keynote speakers, Professor Jian Yang from SJTU School of Naval Architecture Ocean and Civil Engineering presented about the recent innovative research about the surface treatment technique for quality-improving the recycled concrete aggregate (RCA). The research of RCA is a very popular in the field of sustainability in the past decade. In his speech, he reported and discussed the challenges of the use of the RCA in real practice. One of the key challenges is the weaken physical and mechanical properties of the resulting concrete. This is due to the attached old mortar in the RCA which plays detrimental effects on the new concrete.

During the parallel sessions, one of the student attendees from SJTU presented her research paper about nonlinear dynamic analysis on the progressive collapse resistance of multi-story reinforced concrete buildings with slabs. In addition, the next student of SJTU team presented the overview of internal curing materials investigated in the research and mechanisms of the internal curing in concrete. Moreover, another student of SJTU team presented the research about structural behaviors of reinforced concrete frame subjected to progressive collapse under the influence of transverse beam during internal column loss scenario. It was a valuable experience for them to give academic presentations about their researches in this international conference and they had the chance to get feedbacks from experts of other universities to further develop their current works.

In this conference, the best papers in each conference theme were selected by the conference committee among the presented papers. The authors whose work represents groundbreaking research in the respective areas are awarded in the closing ceremony and Miss Sandy Nyunn from SJTU team won the best-paper award in the theme of Sustainable Design in Building Environment. It was a great honor for her to win this award as a student from a Chinese University among many universities from different countries.

To conclude, it has been a great experience for student attendees of SJTU team to attend this international conference with respectable Professor Xila Liu and Professor Jian Yang. They are very thankful to the conference organizer and attendances from other universities. The experience was incredibly valuable and they can take this chance to reflect upon enriching experience in their research and adopt international perspective on how to benefit from exchange of ideas and socializing with international counterparts.
